Opening doors to the future of precision mental health care for anxiety disorders in children and young people

Children whose mental health difficulties are identified early, and effectively addressed, reap the benefits across their lifespan. This has profound benefits for the child and the child’s family as well as significant social benefits. We need to invest in improving outcomes for youth who do not respond optimally to existing treatments we need to identify robust predictors, moderators, and mediators that are ideal targets for personalisation in mental health care. To achieve this, we need to work together as a field. We are building the largest clinical dataset in the field, harnessing existing data by establishing a data repository, the Platform for Anxiety Disorder Data in Youth (PADDY) for clinical trials, setting this up as a global resource, and investigating treatment moderators to advance personalised care for child anxiety. We have 84 datasets from 12 countries totalling over 6800 children who have received treatment for anxiety within a clinical trial. The solution leverages the Individual Patient Data Meta-analysis (IPDMA) approach to allow broader access to individual-level data while maintaining methodological rigour. Such a resource has the potential to answer questions that are unable to be addressed by single studies, reduce researcher burden, and enable the application of newer statistical techniques, all to provide data-driven strategies for clinical decision-making. We will discuss recommendations to address the methods and challenges inherent in this endeavour.
