Background: As consensually non-monogamous (CNM) relationships and subcultures tend to emphasize consensual, explicit communication between partners, it is likely that individuals engaged  in CNM form agreements about acceptable behaviors within and outside their partnerships. However, little research has explored the prevalence, characteristics, and predictors of relationship agreements among multi-partnered individuals. This is important to examine, as agreements are associated with several positive health and relational outcomes, including improved communication, sexual health behaviors, and relationship satisfaction. This study sought to describe characteristics of and motivations for relationship agreements among CNM individuals with multiple partners, as well whether the presence of or motivation for relationship agreements is predicted by factors such as relationship length or relationship orientation (e.g. polyamorous, monogamous).

Method:   In a cross-sectional online survey, 347 U.S. participants (M age 32.4, 52.5% women, 86.4% non-heterosexual) reported on current and ideal relationship agreements, motivations, and relationship characteristics with two to four unique partners. Bivariate and regression analyses were used to examine whether individual and relational factors were related to agreement use.

Results: Most participants (N = 276, 80.0%) had relationship agreements with at least one partner. Common reasons for making an agreement included building trust and honesty, protecting the relationship or partners’ feelings, managing expectations, and promoting sexual health. Individuals with longer relationships or who described their current relationship as polyamorous (vs. open, swinging, monogamish, other) were more likely to have agreements.

Conclusions: For CNM individuals, relationship agreements represent a critical, yet understudied communication and relationship maintenance process. Couples/relationship researchers and therapists must be aware of the prevalence, patterns, and predictors relationship agreements among multi-partnered individuals to ensure competent practice with and inclusion of this growing population.
