Our ability to measure psychological constructs validly and reliably across diverse populations forms the foundation of cognitive and behavioral science. Unfortunately, the development and validation of gold standard measurement tools in psychology has too often proceeded without input from individuals with relevant lived experiences. Moreover, little attention has been paid to tailoring measures based on perspectives of individuals diverse in personal identities, such as race and ethnicity.  This talk will describe the author’s ongoing research to develop a new measure of impaired control over alcohol use. An important part of this measurement development work has been to incorporate cognitive interviewing, a qualitative approach, to understand barriers to item interpretability across individuals with diverse racial and ethnic identities. To do so, the study team recruited 18-45 year olds who endorsed loss-of-control drinking (N=30), with roughly equal numbers of individuals identifying as White, Black, Asian, Latine, or Native American/Alaskan Native. After undergoing refinement based on qualitative data, the impaired control measure was administered within a quantitative validation study in a sample of White and Black individuals (data collection is ongoing). This talk will describe how engaging individuals with lived experience across these diverse identities led to unique insights about best practices in representative alcohol use measurement. The talk will also discuss how engaging community members in measurement development could enhance identification of at-risk people and inform treatment strategies based on enhanced etiologic insights. In addition to describing the author’s ongoing research, this talk will offer practical considerations in the conduct of cognitive interviewing with diverse populations and how this information can guide the creation of more equitable measures in psychology.
