It takes many years to translate a small portion of original research into routine practice settings. Eliminating the large time lag between the development of a novel treatment or treatment adaptation and it being available in the “real world” is a key reason for the development of community-academic partnerships. The critical role of community-academic partnerships is recognized in many implementation frameworks and models, yet the nuts and bolts of how to establish these partnerships is much less clear. This speakers in this symposium will present examples of community-academic partnerships across a variety of contexts including high schools, community mental health centers (CMHCs) and fire service agencies. A common question tackled by all speakers in this symposium is: How do we increase access to CBT treatments that improve sleep and circadian functioning, particularly among communities who are at high risk and/or who are under-served? This question is important because “sleep is a non-negotiable biological state required for the maintenance of human life. … our need for sleep parallels that for air, food, and water” (Grandner & Fernandez, 2021, Science) and “insufficient sleep and mistimed sleep are prominent, yet underappreciated and understudied, contributors to poor mental health and to mental disorders.” (Harvey, 2021, Sleep). The present symposium includes five talks. First, on the path to developing a sustainable sleep health worksite wellness program for firefighters who are at high risk for sleep disturbance and who are unlikely to seek care, our first speaker will present findings from a theory-based survey given to 200 employees and supervisors at 22 fire service agencies. The theoretical framework that guides this program of research is the integrated Promoting Action on Research Implementation in Health Services (iPARIHS) framework. Also, feedback from a Community Advisory Board representing diverse stakeholder perspectives was incorporated. Our second speaker will present qualitative data from stakeholder interviews with fire service leaders, providers and firefighters to adapt an integrated treatment for posttraumatic injury, insomnia and nightmares that has been culturally adapted to take into account the unique strengths and mental health needs of firefighters. Findings from a pilot clinical trial of the resulting intervention will also be presented. The third speaker will present outcomes from research with stakeholders in high schools during the implementation of a novel self-management app for teens. This talk will include pilot data from 223 students across six schools as well as a post-implementation survey to identify facilitators and barriers of implementation and engagement. The fourth talk will present findings from two RCTs conducted in partnership with CMHCs. The goal was to improve mental health outcomes for people who have been diagnosed with a serious mental illness and to test if adapting a sleep/circadian treatment to fit the needs of the CMHC context improved outcomes. The final speaker will expand on the latter talk by presenting data on the role of CMHC provider characteristics and ad-hoc adaptations in implementation outcomes.
