Youth suicide is a major public health concern, and Black youth have experienced disproportionate increases in suicide risk in recent years (e.g., Sheftall et al., 2022). Adolescent suicide risk is often uncovered during routine depression screening in pediatric primary care, yet follow-up care received after that risk is detected has been variable (Davis et al., 2021). Developing and testing scalable solutions, including digital mental health tools, for adolescent suicide prevention is important for addressing this public health crisis.
The current symposium includes four presentations involving data from an NIMH-funded P50 Center. The Enhancing Treatment and Utilization for Depression and Emergent Suicidality (ETUDES) Center aims to improve upon the detection and management of adolescent suicide risk in primary care. The Center has a specific focus on health equity and addressing the growing crisis of Black youth suicide. The symposium will showcase diverse ways to leverage technology and partner with community members to develop and adapt adolescent suicide prevention tools.
The first presentation, “Implementation of a Light-Touch Prevention Program for Teens at Risk for Suicide,” will detail adaptations made to enhance youth engagement with a suite of suicide prevention mobile tools.
Each of the other papers describe feedback received in the process of developing and adapting digital tools for addressing specific risk factors for suicide. In particular, the second presentation, “Technology as Both a Barrier and Facilitator in Addressing Sleep Disturbances Among Adolescents At-Risk for Suicide,” will describe youth, caregiver, and clinician perceptions of the use of technology in the context of a sleep intervention for adolescents. In the third presentation, “Perceptions of Teens and Caregivers on SMILEY, an Automated Depression and Suicide Prevention Intervention for Online Victimized, At-Risk Youth: A Qualitative Study in Pediatric Primary Care Settings,” caregiver and adolescent feedback gathered to inform the development of a chatbot meant to address online victimization will be presented. The fourth presentation, “Adolescent and Parent Perspectives on a Behavioral Activation App to Address Anhedonia” will provide insights from families on ways to enhance a health-coach facilitated mobile application for behavioral activation.
At the conclusion, the discussant will make summary statements and moderate a discussion on digital mental health interventions for youth, key considerations for intervention adaptations, and suicide prevention in primary care.
