This symposium brings together novel research exploring the mechanisms of how rumination is related to internalizing disorders; from developmental, neuropsychological, neuroimaging, and familial perspectives. Rumination, characterized by persistent and repetitive negative thinking, has been consistently linked to a variety of detrimental outcomes, including the emergence, intensity, persistence, and relapse of internalizing symptoms such as depression and anxiety (e.g., Nolen-Hoeksema & Watkins, 2011). This symposium will highlight the multifaceted nature of rumination by presenting research findings from multiple domains.
A comprehensive overview of rumination will be discussed, encompassing prenatal brooding and its repercussions on mental health during the critical transition to postpartum parenting. Furthermore, we will explore co-rumination within the family unit, specifically between parents and adolescents, as well as investigate effect of therapeutic intervention on rumination.
The developmental trajectory of rumination during adolescence, a critical period for emotional and cognitive development, will be discussed through neuroimaging studies. functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) results will be shared to highlight neural alterations before and after Rumination-focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (RF-CBT), offering insights into the neural correlates of rumination change.
The treatment developer, Edward Watkins Ph.D., will enrich our discussion by highlighting current research directions designed to identify the most effective components of rumination interventions. He will also present advancements in making these interventions more accessible, including the development of a self-guided application, marking strides towards scalable mental health solutions.
Overall, this symposium emphasizes a multi-modal, life-span approaching to understanding and intervening in the process of rumination.
