Despite the immense need for mental health services, a significant shortage of licensed providers persists in the United States and around the world. Further, in-person psychotherapy is often prohibitively expensive and delayed due to long waiting lists, exacerbating health disparities. To expand equitable access to services, it is critical to explore alternative delivery pathways. This involves expanding our conceptions of where mental healthcare can be delivered (e.g., through digital platforms, diverse healthcare settings, and community spaces) and who can deliver care (e.g., trained community members, paraprofessionals, non-specialist providers). To make these implementation pathways optimally effective, qualitative and quantitative approaches are needed to understand the perspectives of affected parties on feasibility, acceptability, and barriers/facilitators to engagement, and also to test the effectiveness of such innovative solutions in real-world settings.
This symposium will synthesize cutting-edge research on non-specialist and community mental health care implementation of mental health interventions for individuals with elevated mood or anxiety symptoms. The first talk will qualitatively evaluate the feasibility and accessibility of collaborating with non-profits in a dense U.S. urban region to deliver a digital, self-paced social skills intervention to youth with minoritized identities. The second talk will qualitatively examine the perspectives of anxious youth and their mentors on the feasibility and acceptability of integrating an app-based cognitive bias modification program for anxious youth into mentoring programs located primarily in rural America. The third talk will quantitatively test the effectiveness of a web-based cognitive bias modification program for anxiety and of supplemental support from non-specialist, college and graduate student telecoaches in a large, international sample of anxious community adults. The fourth talk will explore the mediating role of help-seeking in an intervention delivered by college instructors on mental health and well-being outcomes in minoritized and first-generation U.S. university students. Finally, the fifth talk will qualitatively evaluate primary care doctors’ experiences of addressing patient mental health needs using Precision Behavioral Health, a care model that matches patients to an evidence-based ecosystem of digital interventions. In line with this year’s conference theme our discussant will synthesize the implications of these talks for advancing innovative models of delivering interventions in the community, particularly for increasing access to care among underserved populations.
