The Hispanic/Latino community comprises almost 20% of the United States population, and it is projected that by 2030, 30% of youth under 18 will identify as Hispanic/Latino (US Census Bureau, 2019). Although the Hispanic/Latino community is the largest ethnic minority group in the US, they are severely underrepresented in mental health research, despite facing higher risk for mental health concerns and lower rates of treatment utilization compared to other ethnic minority groups (Flores, 2010). This disparity underscores the urgent need for further research to engage stakeholders in child mental health services. Engagement of stakeholders holds promise for increasing Hispanic/Latino children’s access to services and ultimately enhancing their health outcomes.
The symposium will present key findings on engaging stakeholders across various systems of care, including outpatient clinics, school systems, and the child welfare system. Each of the five talks will delve into different aspects of engaging stakeholders for child mental health symptoms, treatment, and engagement in Hispanic/Latino youth.
The first talk, given by Dan O’Connell, Maria Cuervo, Jesse Walker, and colleagues, will shed light on the perspectives on mental health service utilization among Central American mothers and adolescents who were separated during migration. The second talk, by Guadalupe Patriarca and Dr. Jeremy Pettit, will present data on Hispanic/Latino parents' views on their involvement in treating child anxiety, focusing on the alignment between cultural values and parent strategies in parent-involved treatment for child anxiety. The third talk, given by Dr. Victor Buitron and colleagues, will present findings on strategies to address suicide-related stigma among Spanish-speaking Hispanic/Latino parents, incorporating parents’ beliefs and self-generated counter-arguments. The fourth talk, by Paulina Paredes Cienega and Dr. Antonio Polo, will delve into adolescent perspectives on school-based intervention for depression, administered by mental health providers. In the final talk, Dr. Thania Galvan and Amanda Perozo-Garcia will present findings from a longitudinal study assessing caregiver-child relations impacting symptoms of posttraumatic stress and the role of these relations in promoting resilience among Hispanic/Latino youth in the child welfare system. Lastly, Dr. Denise Chavira will discuss the relative contributions of each of these studies to the empirical and clinical literatures as well as outline directions for future research.
Collectively, these talks will provide invaluable insights into engaging stakeholders, including parents and mental health care workers, with a specific focus on Hispanic/Latino parents' and youth's perspectives on mental health symptoms and care. This symposium represents a significant step toward addressing the disparities in mental health research and treatment within the Hispanic/Latino community, ultimately leading to more effective and culturally competent interventions.
