Dr. Donte Bernard is a co-developer and co-director of the ABCT CHANGE Leaders Program. He is also a licensed clinical psychologist and Assistant Professor of child clinical psychology at the University of Missouri-Columbia. His research program examines how and why racism operates as a social determinant of health to undergird, perpetuate, and sustain racial disparities in mental health in the United States. The overarching goal of his work is to improve developmental trajectories in mental and behavioral health among Black youth through informing intervention development targeting the reduction of racism-related stress and trauma and their related health consequences. His research aims specifically to 1) characterize the prevalence and psychological consequences associated with racism-related stress and trauma among Black youth and emerging adults; 2) investigate culturally relevant pathways of risk and resilience that link or disrupt the connection between racism and mental health; and 3) elucidate how structural racism informs mental health trajectories among Black youth.
