Abstract Text: CBT is an effective treatment for a multitude of mental illnesses, though the treatment has been studied less within the context of prolonged grief disorder. In addition, treatments continue to be evaluated in culturally and economically diverse settings, where patients may have limited access to treatments.. A total of 28 subjects with prolonged grief disorder in a rural community in Ukraine with limited access to psychotherapy services were assigned to a 3 session computerized cognitive-behavior treatment or a waitlist condition. Outcome measures included the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Posttraumatic Cognitions Inventory (PTCI) and The World Health Organization Quality of Life short-form assessment (WHOQOL-BREF). Within-group analyses, the CBT treatment group exhibited improvements in depression symptoms, cognitions, and quality of life, while the waitlist group did not show any significant improvement. Compared to the waitlist group, the CBT treatment group showed significantly greater improvements in BDI symptoms in both completer analysis and intention-to-treat analysis. Results indicate that a brief form of CBT is effective in the treatment of prolonged grief disorder in rural settings where patients may be unable to engage in longer treatments.
