(PS1-76) Adaptation of a Diabetes Prevention Lifestyle Intervention Program to Fit the Needs of Hispanic/latina Mothers

Lifestyle interventions successfully prevent/delay type 2 diabetes in highly controlled efficacy studies. Despite the disproportionate impact of type 2 diabetes on Hispanic individuals, translations of efficacious interventions to real-world settings do not appear to fit the needs of this population, as these programs have failed to successfully engage and retain Hispanic participants. Involving family members in lifestyle interventions targeting Hispanic mothers may improve engagement and lifestyle change among these women given their central role in the family (e.g., typically doing the grocery shopping, cooking). Furthermore, this approach has the potential to positively impact the health of the broader family, ultimately reducing disparities.
The community-based participatory research (CBPR) project of focus in this presentation involves a collaboration between academic researchers and partners at a local community-based organization. The aim of the project is to adapt the National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP) to meet the needs of Hispanic/Latina mothers in Utah. Currently, we are carrying out a formative evaluation trial of the National DPP core curriculum (anticipated completion, April 2024). The 10 participants enrolled in the study include 5 dyads (i.e., Hispanic mothers at high risk for type 2 diabetes along with adult family members). Mothers were required to have at least one child under 18 living in the home. On average, mothers were in their mid-40s (M age = 47.3 years). Following each intervention class, qualitative data are collected through audio-recorded focus groups with (a) mothers, and (b) their family members. The primary goal of these focus groups is to better understand the specific needs of Hispanic mothers and their families, along with recommendations for adapting the lifestyle intervention. Recordings will be transcribed and transcripts coded in ATLAS.ti. Results will be summarized and discussed by the team together with a community advisory board (CAB) of affected individuals (e.g., family members of, or individuals at risk for type 2 diabetes, healthcare providers, community health workers) (April-August 2024).
Focus group results and an overview of feedback from the CAB will be summarized, along with recommended adaptations for a culturally responsive lifestyle intervention that fits the needs of Hispanic mothers and their family members.
