(PS12-69) Exploring the Integration of Generative AI in CBT Process and Outcome: A Process-oriented Perspective on Therapeutic Alliance

Abstract Text: The adoption of ChatGPT and similar AI technologies in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) offers a unique opportunity to enhance therapeutic strategies and outcomes. This paper investigates the perspectives of 100 mental health professionals on incorporating ChatGPT into CBT, focusing on its impact on the therapeutic alliance, therapy personalization, and client engagement. The study illuminates ChatGPT's potential to support evidence-based practice by providing accessible information on cognitive-behavioral techniques, facilitating homework assignments, and fostering skill development, while also addressing concerns regarding empathy, personalization, and ethical issues in AI application.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a well-established psychological treatment. With the advent of AI technologies like ChatGPT, there is a burgeoning interest in their potential to augment CBT practices, warranting an examination of their implications for therapy dynamics and efficacy.

Utilizing a mixed-methods research design, this study surveyed 100 CBT practitioners to understand their views on integrating ChatGPT into their clinical work. - Concerns About Emotional Nuance and Empathy:** Despite the benefits, there is skepticism regarding ChatGPT's ability to replicate the nuanced empathy and understanding a human therapist offers, which are pivotal in building a strong therapeutic alliance.

- Ethical and Confidentiality Considerations: The ethical use of AI in therapy, particularly regarding client confidentiality and data security, was emphasized. Professionals advocated for clear guidelines and secure practices in the deployment of ChatGPT in clinical settings.

Conclusion:
While ChatGPT presents a promising adjunct to traditional CBT practices by enhancing educational resources, homework engagement, and evidence-based treatment planning, it cannot replace the empathic, personalized care provided by human therapists. A balanced integration of ChatGPT within CBT should enhance, not undermine, the therapeutic alliance, ensuring adherence to ethical standards and personalized care. Further research is needed to develop frameworks for the effective and ethical integration of AI tools in CBT, aiming to optimize therapeutic outcomes while maintaining the core values of empathy and client-centered care.
