Abstract Text: Humans tend to make judgments about a person within the first 100 milliseconds of seeing their face (Verosky, 2020). Black individuals tend to be judged according to negative racial stereotypes (Priest et. al 2018). The faces of Black people typically feature Afrocentric features, including but not limited to darker skin, wide nose, and full lips. This study sought to examine this relationship on a liberal arts college located in Charlotte, NC. Faces used within this study were chosen from the Chicago Face Database (CFD). From the qualifying stimuli, 10 faces were chosen for each of the following groups: Black female, Black male, White female, White male. Results demonstrated that, contrary to our hypothesis, there were no significant differences between attributions of dependability, trustworthiness, or attraction between Black and White women. However, black men, when compared to white men, were considered more trustworthy, dependable, and attractive. The results from this study possibly could be used as a potential form of healing. Black adolescents and young adults are at a high risk of greater depression and anxiety due to the increased interaction with perceived racially backed events (Su et al., 2021). The results of this study demonstrate a potential shift in comfortability and views of race, which conflicts with past findings suggesting that Black people are often perceived as less trustworthy (Priest et al., 2018). Future studies should seek encompass more representative ages, races, and ethnicities.
