Abstract Text:

Background: The Strengths Use Scale (SUS, Govindji & Linley, 2007) is the most widely used instrument to assess strengths use. Although the original one-factor model has been supported, several studies suggest a two-factor model comprising (1) affinity for strengths use (opportunities where individuals could live out or apply their strengths) and (2) strengths use behaviors (actions employed by individuals to actively develop and apply their strengths to achieve life goals.). In addition, only one validation of the SUS Spanish version in a sample of employees has been conducted so far (Peláez et al., 2023).

Aims: This study aims to analyze the psychometric properties of the SUS Spanish version in the general population.

Method: 258 people (70.9% women; Age: M = 31.26; SD = 14.48) filled the SUS and questionnaires related to strength knowledge (SKS, Govindji & Linley, 2007) and well-being (MHC-SF, Keyes, 2008) via an online survey. Two confirmatory factorial analysis (CFA) were conducted with one and two dimensions.

Results: Only the CFA with 2-factor structure was supported (χ2(76) = 228.53, p < 0.001; CFI = 0.90, RMSEA = 0.09, SRMR = 0.06). Factor loadings ranged from 0.52 to 0.89. The questionnaire demonstrated adequate internal consistency (α = .81 ─ .92), test-retest reliability after 2 months (r = .68 ─ .70,) and construct validity (SKS, r = .58 ─ .63; MHC-SF, r =.51 ─ .60).

Conclusion: The SUS is a reliable and valid tool to use in the Spanish population, including the dimensions of affinity and active strengths use behavior.
