Abstract Text: Food and alcohol disturbance (FAD; i.e., engaging in disordered eating behaviors within the context of alcohol consumption to compensate for additional caloric intake and/or increase the intoxicating effects on alcohol) is common among college students and increases the risks associated with excessive drinking and heightens the potential for developing short- and long-term health complications. Identifying factors that may increase risk for FAD is important for the development of effective preventive interventions. Drive for thinness (i.e., the desire to obtain a thin body ideal) is associated with compensatory FAD and individuals who self-objectify (i.e., viewing oneself primarily as an object to be looked at and evaluated based on physical appearance). To that end, self-objectification was investigated as a moderator of the association between drive for thinness and compensatory and alcohol effects FAD. It was anticipated that the moderation would be significant for compensatory, but not for alcohol effects FAD. A total of 853 university students (77.1% female; 69.9% White) completed self-report measures of drive for thinness (Eating disorder Inventory – Drive for Thinness), self-objectification (Objectified Body Consciousness Scale – Self-Surveillance), FAD behavior (Compensatory Eating and Behaviors in Response to Alcohol Consumption Scale), alcohol consumption (AUDIT-C), and disordered eating (Eating Disorder Diagnostic Scale). Four multiple linear regressions were conducted to test moderation hypotheses with respect to alcohol effects FAD and compensatory FAD (Diet & Exercise, Restriction, Purging). Contrary to hypotheses, self-objectification did not moderate the relationship between drive for thinness and any FAD behavior. Controlling for alcohol consumption, eating disorder symptoms, body mass index, and gender, more drive for thinness was associated with more Diet & Exercise FAD (b = .08, p </span>< .01). More self-objectification was associated with less P</span>urging FAD (b = -.01, p </span>= .04). Drive for thinness and self-objectification may not be central to FAD and other risk factors should be explored to identify effective prevention targets for college students.
