Abstract Text: Anger is often associated with feelings such as frustration or hostility directed outwardly, towards external factors or individuals. However, emerging research has given insight into the nuanced nature of anger, revealing that individuals may also experience it inwardly, directed towards themselves (Ellsworth & Tong, 2006; Silva, 2022). This phenomenon, known as self-directed anger, remains relatively understudied within psychological literature, validating further research to unravel its complexities and implications. This study aimed to explore the underlying structure of self-anger using a modified scale. A sample of 169 participants recruited from diverse demographic backgrounds, completed the Self-Anger Disorders Scale (SA-DS: R), a newly adapted measure based upon the Anger Disorders Scale- Short Form (ADS:S: DiGiuseppe & Tafrate, 2004), focusing on self-direct anger, along with other relevant measures. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted to investigate the underlying factor structure of the SA-DS and assess its reliability. Results from the EFA revealed a 5-factor solution: Internal Expression of self-anger, Outward Expression of self-anger, Self-Punitive Expression of self-anger, Self-anger tolerance, and Non-Expression of self-anger, explaining 67.2% of the variance. Additionally, Cronbach’s alpha coefficients indicated a high internal consistency for the overall scale (α = 0.91), supporting the scale's reliability. These findings offer valuable insights into the measurement of self-anger and highlight the utility of the SA-DS in assessing this complex construct. Moreover, this research emphasizes the significance of examining self-anger, shedding light on its underlying structure, and highlighting its potential relevance in mental health research and clinical practice. Further research is needed to understand the role of self-directed anger in psychopathology and in turn, develop targeted interventions aimed at mitigating its adverse effects. Understanding self-anger can inform therapeutic approaches to address maladaptive coping strategies and promote emotion regulation in individuals struggling with internalized anger.
