Abstract Text: Intro. Arslan's (2023) research showed that self-compassion mediates the association between dysfunctional parent modes (Young et al., 2003) and emotional distress and subjective well-being. We attempted to replicate this finding in a sample of American undergraduates and tried to extend this line of research by looking at social support and dysfunctional thinking as two other potential mediators.

Method. We collected data on 208 undergraduates who remotely completed measures of Dysfunctional Parent Modes (Lobbestael et al., 2010), Emotional Distress (Schalet et al., 2016), Subjective Well-Being (Renshaw 2016), and measures of the three mediators: Self-Compassion (Raes et al., 2011), Perceived Social Support (Cyranowski et al., 2013), and Irrational Thinking (DiGiuseppe et al., 2020).

Results. We replicated Arslan (2023), finding that Self-Compassion mediated the association between Dysfunctional Parent Modes, and Emotional Distress (Indirect effect = 0.061, s.e. = 0.020, z = 2.969, 95% CI = 0.021, 0.101, p < .003), and Subjective Well-being (Indirect effect = −0.293, s.e. = 0.050, z = −5.807, 95% CI = −0.392, −0.194, p < .001). When we compared three mediators (Self Compassion, Social Support, Dysfunctional thinking), we found that only Dysfunctional thinking was a significant mediator of the association between Dysfunctional Parent Modes and Emotional Distress (Indirect effect = 0.113, s.e.= 0.027, z = 4.111, 95% CI = 0.059, 0.167, p < .001). However, when we examined Subjective Well-Being as the dependent variable, Social Support (Indirect effect = −0.089, s.e. = 0.026, z = −3.458, 95% CI = −0.140, −0.039, p < .001 ) and Self-Compassion (Indirect effect = −0.263, s.e. = 0.049, z = −5.358, 95% CI = −0.359 ,−0.167, p < .001) were significant mediators of the association between Dysfunctional Parent Modes and Subjective Well-being, but Dysfunctional Thinking was not significant a significant mediator.

Conclusions. We replicated Arslan's (2023) findings in an American sample. When extending Arslan's (2023) work, we found that Dysfunctional thinking was a significant mediator when predicting Emotional Distress. On the other hand, when predicting Subjective Well-being, Dysfunctional Thinking was not significant, but Self-Compassion and Social Support were significant mediators. It seems that different combinations of predictors and mediators are relevant depending on the valence of the outcome variable (distress vs. well-being). The relevance of these findings for cognitive models of emotional functioning and psychotherapy are discussed.
